Laser Safety Course

Target audience

The course is required for anyone working with laser or entering laser rooms (with access restriction), where laser are running. No knowledge about laser and laser experiments are required


The participants learn

  • Identify laser components
  • Understand the meaning of laser classes
  • Laser beam and non-beam hazards
  • Engineering and administrative controls
  • Personal protective equipment (safety googles)
  • Rules for laser at PSI

Course content

  • Rules and responsibilities for laser safety
  • General concepts of laser
  • Laser classes
  • Laser beam and non-beam hazards
  • The most endangered part of the body for laser radiation: the eyes
  • How to control laser hazards: engineering and adminstrative controls and the concepts of personal protective equipment
  • Rules for safe operation of laser at PSI
  • What to do in the case of an accident

The short course will be organized in 2 parts: the first part is a lecture (can be interactive) where all the concepts and topics are explained. The second part is self assessment about the contents of the course (and open questions).
